Booked campsite did not open? What to do if you are moved to another site
At several recent events, including MotoGP 2025 and 2026, guests arrived to learn that the event campsite they had bought was not opening because of low demand, and that they would be placed at other campsites instead. Many were surprised to end up somewhere other than what they had booked. Here is how to check your booking in advance and what your options are.
Short answer
A camping ticket names a campsite, and the seller is not always the operator. Ask in writing who operates the pitch, its address, and whether it is confirmed to open on your dates. If you are moved, you are generally entitled to a clear description of the replacement and, if it is materially different from what you booked, to decline it and ask for a refund.
What has been observed
Editors are aware of cases at Red Bull Ring events in which a campsite that had been sold in advance through ticket shops or portals was not opened because too few pitches had been booked. Guests were then referred to other campsites near Spielberg. The same pattern was reported in the previous year. The guide does not assess individual providers on this page; it describes what guests should check.
Why a different campsite is not just a detail
- Distance: walking distance to the main entrance ranges from under 1 km to several kilometres depending on the site. See the Distance Check.
- Night noise: exposure differs by location. See the Noise Check.
- Access and facilities: approach roads on race days, sanitary facilities, power and water differ between sites.
- Official accreditation: only campsites with one of the official colour codes are part of the circuit's traffic and safety concept. See Official accreditation.
Checklist before you book
- Book a named campsite, not an anonymous "camping ticket".
- Read the seller's legal notice and terms: who is the contracting party, who operates the campsite?
- Ask by email for written confirmation of operator, address or GPS position, and that the campsite opens on your dates.
- Keep screenshots of the offer, the campsite description and your confirmation.
- Pay with a method that offers buyer protection, for example a credit card.
If you are moved anyway
- Ask the seller in writing for the exact replacement: campsite name, address, pitch category, distance to the entrance.
- Compare it with what you booked (distance, facilities, category).
- If it is materially different, you can generally decline it and request a refund. Set a reasonable deadline.
- Keep all messages. If the seller does not respond, contact your payment provider or a consumer advice centre (in Austria: Arbeiterkammer / Verein für Konsumenteninformation; in the EU: the European Consumer Centre in your country).
General information, not legal advice. Your rights depend on the contract and the applicable law.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if the event campsite I booked does not open?
Editors are aware of cases in recent seasons, including MotoGP 2025 and 2026, in which a pre-sold event campsite did not open because of low demand and guests were referred to other campsites. If this happens to you, you have not lost your booking: ask the seller in writing for the exact alternative (campsite name, address, pitch category, distance to the Red Bull Ring) or for a refund. You are generally not obliged to accept a substitute that is materially different from what you booked.
How can I tell who actually operates the pitch I am buying?
The name on a ticket shop, portal or booking confirmation is not always the name of the campsite operator. Check the legal notice (imprint) and terms of the seller, and ask by email: who operates the campsite, what is its address or GPS position, and is the opening confirmed for my dates? Answers in writing protect you if plans change later.
Do I have to accept a replacement campsite?
As a rule, no. A booking is a contract for a specific service. If the provider cannot deliver it, you can usually choose between an equivalent replacement that you agree to, or cancellation with a full refund. Check the seller's terms and your local consumer law; this page is general information and not legal advice.
Why does a change of campsite matter so much at the Red Bull Ring?
Walking distance to the circuit, noise exposure at night, access roads and facilities differ substantially between the campsites around Spielberg. Two pitches at the same event can be 900 m and several kilometres from the main entrance. See the independent Distance Check and Noise Check of this guide before you accept a substitute.
How can I reduce the risk before I book?
Book a named campsite, not an anonymous 'camping ticket'. Ask for written confirmation of the operator, the address and the opening for your dates. Keep screenshots of the offer and the confirmation. Pay by a method that offers buyer protection, such as a credit card. Check whether the campsite carries one of the official Red Bull Ring colour codes.
