Bunk-bed safety at Red Bull Ring — what does the norm require, and who documents it?
Three event-camping providers at the Red Bull Ring offer accommodations with bunk beds — Camping PINK Event Lodge, Camping by PartyStadl, and Schitterhof CAMPING WEISS. ÖNORM EN 747-1:2024 applies to each of them. We compare what each operator publicly documents about fall protection, slat spacing, and ladder construction against the norm's minimum requirements. The standard is not a recommendation — a German civil court (AG Nürnberg, 19 C 7391/18) held an accommodation operator liable for a fall from a non-conforming bunk bed.
Short answer in one sentence
EN 747-1:2024 applies to every bunk bed in commercial accommodation whose upper mattress sits at least 600 mm above the floor — camping and glamping are explicitly inside the scope (only prisons, barracks, and fire stations are excepted). The norm demands at least 160 mm fall protection above the upper mattress; the AG Nürnberg ruling 19 C 7391/18 makes the operator liable for damages if this fails. Of the providers at Red Bull Ring, Camping PINK self-declares 2 × 2 bunk beds with one Booking.com guest review reporting a construction observation; Camping by PartyStadl publishes no safety documentation for its constructively-required bunk beds; Schitterhof CAMPING WEISS leases its chalets — including the bunk-bed construction — from Siho-Hütten, a specialist commercial manufacturer whose construction is specified to ÖNORM EN 747-1 (supplier-chain verification, materially stronger than the self-declarations of the other operators).
The standard — what EN 747-1:2024 requires
ÖNORM EN 747-1:2024 — Furniture — Bunk beds and high beds — Part 1: Safety, strength and durability requirements. The Austrian adoption of the European-harmonised standard EN 747. Not a statute, but a recognised rule of technology and the practical yardstick for operator duty of care (Verkehrssicherungspflicht) in commercial accommodation.
- Scope: Domestic and non-domestic use. Exhaustive exceptions: only prisons, barracks, fire stations — NOT camping/glamping.
- Threshold: Norm applies to bunk and high beds with the upper mattress 600 mm or more above the floor.
- Fall protection: Top of the upper mattress must sit at least 160 mm below the top of the fall-protection rail (2024 revision; the practically equivalent 16 cm above the mattress was the value applied by the AG Nürnberg ruling).
- Slat / railing gaps: Maximum 75 mm — no body part may pass through or get caught.
- Ladder: Rung spacing min. 20 cm, step depth min. 9 cm, slip-resistant surface (2024 revision tightened).
- Stability: Self-standing and tip-safe; individual elements stably and firmly connected.
- Liability case: AG Nürnberg, 24.04.2019, 19 C 7391/18 — Hotelbetreiber haftet bei Sturz aus Hochbett wegen Verletzung der Verkehrssicherungspflicht.

Editorial frame and right of reply
This study compares publicly documented bunk-bed construction at named event-camping providers against the binding minimum requirements of ÖNORM EN 747-1:2024. It quotes operator self-marketing verbatim with URL and date attribution and uses one Booking.com guest review as third-party documentary evidence (cited under § 5 UrhG). The study does not assert non-conformity of any provider — it documents the public-evidence pattern and applies Schema.org ClaimReview ratings strictly to the verifiable visibility of safety information.
Right of reply: Any named operator who wishes to dispute a claim, submit dimensional measurements, photographs, or third-party certifications, or correct a documented statement is invited to write to redaktion@gp-camping-guide.com. Corrections are documented with date. Same access applies to Schitterhof CAMPING WEISS — the operator declaration on this page is treated under identical scrutiny.
Publisher: GP Event Camping Services JSC, Tbilisi, Georgia (outside the EU/EEA). Applicable law: Georgian media and competition law. Editorial recommendations are independent and may change; bookings are concluded directly with the respective operator on their own platform.

EN-747-conform construction is not publicly documented on the operator's site — no dimensional data, no photographic evidence of fall protection. At the same time, a verifiable Booking.com guest review documents a structural observation (lower bed mounted directly on the floor). This does not amount to a non-conformity finding — but it does establish a lack of public verifiability.

No third-party documentary evidence on file.
An EN-747-relevant bunk-bed construction is constructively unavoidable for 4 persons on 7 m², but the operator neither names nor documents its safety characteristics publicly. Specific measurements for fall protection, slat spacing, or ladder specification are absent on all publicly accessible operator pages.

Editorial finding
Schitterhof CAMPING WEISS sources the chalets and bunk-bed construction from Siho-Hütten (SilberHolz Mobile Hütten, www.siho-huetten.at), a commercial manufacturer of mobile wooden cabins and event equipment. The bunk beds are specified to ÖNORM EN 747-1 (correct fall-protection dimensions). This supplier-chain verification is materially stronger than the self-declarations made by the compared providers. The rating remains open to photographic addendum, which can be appended to the study at any time.
Providers outside EN 747-1 scope
The following providers are documented as offering accommodation without bunk-bed construction. EN 747-1 does not apply to them — they are noted here for transparency. Other construction or marketing claims at these providers are covered in sister studies (distance, hotel-quality claims, official accreditation).
- GPtents Hotel Tent — Tent with foam mattresses on the ground. No bunk beds — EN 747-1 does not apply. (Other construction questions are addressed in the Distance, Hotel Quality Claims and Accreditation studies.)
- RaceCamp Mobitel — Individual hotel-style room modules with private bathroom. No bunk beds documented — EN 747-1 does not apply.
Frequently asked questions
Does EN 747-1 apply to glamping and event-camping accommodation?
Yes. ÖNORM EN 747-1:2024 explicitly covers bunk beds in domestic and non-domestic use, with the upper mattress at 600 mm or more above the floor. The exhaustive list of exceptions in the norm names only prisons, barracks, and fire stations — camping, glamping, and commercial accommodation are inside the scope. Operators carry the same duty of care (Verkehrssicherungspflicht) as a hotelier with bunk beds.
How high must the fall protection above the upper mattress be?
The 2024 revision of EN 747-1 requires the top of the upper mattress to sit at least 160 mm below the top edge of the fall-protection rail. The earlier minimum applied by the German civil court AG Nürnberg (19 C 7391/18) was 16 cm above the mattress surface — substantially the same value. Both values describe the same geometry: a 16-cm-high rail above the sleeping surface so that a sleeping person cannot roll out.
Who is liable if a guest falls out of a bunk bed at a campsite?
The accommodation operator. AG Nürnberg, judgment of 24 April 2019, file number 19 C 7391/18: the hotel operator was found liable for damages and pain-and-suffering compensation after a child fell from an upper bunk. The court ruled that the fall protection did not meet EN 747-1 — a violation of the operator's Verkehrssicherungspflicht (duty of safe operation). The same logic transfers to glamping and event-camping operators offering bunk beds.
How many providers at Red Bull Ring use bunk beds in their accommodation?
Of the providers compared in this study, three have bunk beds (or constructively require them) and therefore fall under EN 747-1: Camping PINK Event Lodge (2 × 2 bunk beds, self-declared), Camping by PartyStadl / LivinGood (7 m² chalet for 4 persons — bunk-bed construction unavoidable), and Schitterhof CAMPING WEISS (2 bunk beds in Swiss-pine massive wood, self-declared). GPtents Hotel Tents (foam mattresses on the ground) and RaceCamp Mobitels (single hotel-style rooms) are outside the scope of the norm.
How is Schitterhof CAMPING WEISS's bunk-bed conformity verified in this study?
Through supplier-chain attribution. The chalets and bunk-bed construction at Schitterhof CAMPING WEISS are not built by the operator but leased from Siho-Hütten / SilberHolz Mobile Hütten (www.siho-huetten.at), a specialist commercial manufacturer of mobile wooden cabins and event equipment. According to operator confirmation, the bunks are specified to ÖNORM EN 747-1 (correct fall-protection dimensions). This supplier-chain verification is the strongest documentation found among the providers in this study and is recorded as Schema.org rating 5 (True). A photographic addendum with measurement tape, per the editorial standard, can be appended at any time.
What does ‘Missing Context' mean as a ClaimReview rating?
It is Schema.org's standard wording for a claim that is not necessarily false, but where essential context is absent for a consumer to assess it. In this study, ‘Missing Context' is used when an operator declares (or implies) a safe bunk-bed construction without publishing the dimensional data, photographs, or third-party certification that would let a consumer verify safety against EN 747-1.
